Standards Initiatives for Software Product Line Engineering and Management within the International Organization for Standardization

Software product line engineering is an establishedmethodology for fast and effective developmentof software-intensive systems and services. Toreap maximum benefits from the methodology, businessestypically need to implement coordinated changesin development methodologies, tools, product architectures,organizational designs, and business models. Productlines are developed in complex international softwareecosystems, but there is no coordinated set ofinternational standards for defining and leveraging themethodology. As a result, ecosystems cannot adoptstandardized methods and tools for developing productlines, tool vendors face difficulties in developing toolsto enable product line engineering, and universitiescannot effectively set up product line engineeringcourses because an internationally accepted curriculumis missing. The International Organization for Standardizationhas initiated several projects to create a set ofinternational standards for software product line engineering.Practitioners, researchers, and other stakeholderscan contribute to these projects through their nationalstandards bodies. This paper discusses the projectsand future directions for product line standardization.
